Congratulations to Bill Salot from Colonial Heights, VA who won the 2017 VA Commonwealth Checker Championship which is his third title, the other two in 2009 & 2010.
Congratulations to Lapin Vadym from Kiev, Ukraine who won the 2017 VA Commonwealth Open Checker Tournament Title. Impressive! Lapin only lost one game, 11 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws, and 1 Bye round.
Congratulations to Bobby Gerringer from Pittsboro, NC who finished second with an impressive 10 wins, 2 losses, and 4 draws.
Congratulations to Mike Ross from Burlington, NC who earned the only win against Lapin Vadym.
Congratulations to Frank Cole from Halifax, Virginia who played his first ACF Checker Tournament by participating in this VA Open.
Mr. Buck Smith - President of ODCA, and also serving as our tournament director / referee welcomed thirteen VA & NC players to the 100th Annual Old Dominion Checker Association's Virginia Commonwealth Open Checker Tournament. Buck mentioned their appreciation for the eight NC players who support and participate in the VA Open. Buck also opened our pre-tournament business meeting with prayer. We played a Swiss format with one repair in the final round with eight North Carolinians, 4 Virginians, and Lapin for Kiev, Ukraine.
Players were welcomed to Quality-Dutch Inn, Collinsville by a nice office desktop display announcing "Celebrating Our 100th Anniversary (1917-2017) Old Dominion Checker Association" and the Tournament Banner was displayed in the hotel lobby along with the smaller 11" x 17" banner poster.
The Tournament schedule and a list of nearby restaurants were posted on the playing room wall.
The
Commonwealth of Virginia Checker Champions roster was posted on the playing room wall,
both ascending and descending order.
We had a large ice chest full of bottled water as well at the hotel furnished
coffee in the lobby and they also kept a larger pitcher of ice water and glasses in our
conference room. The "Hague" Conference room door was post with an 11" X 17"
Poster Banner
on the door. Total prize fund was from the $20 entry fees (13x$20=$260),
+ a $34 contribution, and plus the $300 from Joe
McDaniel's contribution, totaling $594 for the cash prize fund. We appreciate
Uncle Joe for contributing $300 to our prize fund. We presented two trophies at our closing ceremony and gave away
6 tumblers as door prizes. There was the 2017 VA Open Tournament
Trophy that was presented to Lapin Vadym, and the 2017 Virginia Commonwealth
Checker Champion Tournament Trophy was presented to Bill Salot. The six Polar Camel 30 oz. Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumblers
w/clear lid and optional slide lid were given out randomly, selecting
the player from the pairing deck as door
prizes. Bill Salot, JR Smith, Buck Smith, Frank Cole, George Cox, and
Glenn Fuquay received these six tumblers. Mike Ross brought his honey and a bag of muscadines & scuppernongs
for players to enjoy. Buck Smith recognized Bill Salot as the 2017 Virginia State Champion
by presenting him a trophy and enters him again into
the Virginia State Champion Winners
Roster. Ratings are from ACF: Before and After Ratings are the results of a player's rating before this
tournament and after it is recalculated from this score-sheet by ACF rating
processor, Joe Moore. "T" separates player's opponent from player's game points: Draw is
1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4. We appreciate Ms. Pat Flint, Food & Beverage Manager who had
our "Hague" conference room set up. Quality Dutch Inn - Collinsville
attest to being an ideal Virginia tournament venue which provided all the
amenities you want in a clean family environment and they also serve an excellent breakfast and lunch.
This is especially encouraging when considering room price with a nice playing
facility. We appreciate Buck Smith for directing this VA State Checker
Tournament and serving as our referee and scorekeeper. Buck Smith had tournament
players' addresses & emails list
available for those who wanted to make contact and invite players to next
year's
tournament. Happy Birthday to Bill Salot! He turned 88 years young on
Friday, September 20th, 2017 and our oldest player at the tournament, and the youngest player would be
Richard Marlowe who turned
33 on June 18th. We also remember Mike Ross who just celebrated his 64th birthday on September 15th,
and Willie Tart turned 74 September 20th. Congratulations! Buck and Barbara, who celebrated their
61st Anniversary on Saturday, September 23rd. It was announced that a group of NC & VA players meet on Wednesday morning at
Eden Public Library
at 9:30 am and play checkers. The next four checker tournaments were announced: Saturday,
October 7th,
“Cedarock”
This VA tournament is always a pleasure to attend; it's great to compete with the Virginians, top quality checker players. Most everyone enjoyed a nice lunch or dinner with checker friends, particularly at The Pacific Bay Steak & Seafood.
